Top Treatment Options
Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy)
A major surgery to remove the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine (duodenum), gallbladder, and bile duct. It is mainly performed to treat pancreatic cancer, but also for benign tumors and chronic pancreatitis.
Advantages
- 1. Curative potential for early-stage pancreatic, bile duct, or duodenal cancer.
- 2. Improves survival chances in selected patients with operable tumors.
- 3. Relieves symptoms like jaundice, pain, or digestive issues.
Limitations
- 1. High surgical risk due to complexity; possible complications like infections or leakage.
- 2. Long recovery period (hospital stay 7β14 days; full recovery takes weeks to months).
- 3. Digestive issues post-surgery (may require enzyme supplements or dietary changes).
Distal Pancreatectomy
A surgical procedure that removes the tail and/or body of the pancreas, often along with the spleen. It is used to treat pancreatic tumors, cysts, chronic pancreatitis, or neuroendocrine tumors located in the distal (far) part of the pancreas.
Advantages
- 1. Targeted removal of tumors/cysts in the pancreas tail or body.
- 2. Less extensive than Whipple, resulting in shorter operating time.
- 3. Can preserve pancreatic function if a portion of the gland remains.
Limitations
- 1. May require spleen removal, increasing infection risk (requires vaccines).
- 2. Potential for diabetes if a large portion of the pancreas is removed.
- 3. Complications like leakage from the pancreatic duct or delayed gastric emptying.
ERCP with Stenting (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)
ERCP is a non-surgical, endoscopic technique used to diagnose and treat pancreatic or bile duct blockages. A stent is placed during the procedure to keep narrowed or blocked ducts open, often due to gallstones, tumors, or strictures.
Advantages
- 1. Minimally invasive β avoids open surgery.
- 2. Immediate symptom relief in jaundice or blocked bile ducts.
- 3. Diagnostic + therapeutic β can detect and treat in one session.
Limitations
- 1. Risk of pancreatitis (post-ERCP complication).
- 2. Stent may need replacement over time (especially plastic stents).
- 3. Not suitable for all tumors or advanced blockages.
