About RETINAL DETACHMENT

Connecting you with India’s leading specialists in these medical fields

Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition where the retina pulls away from the back of the eye.

• Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
• Tractional Retinal Detachment (diabetic-related)
• Exudative Retinal Detachment
• Retinal Tears or Holes
• Pediatric Retinal Detachment

A surgical procedure where the eye’s vitreous gel is removed to access the retina. The surgeon reattaches the retina and replaces the gel with a gas bubble or silicone oil.

  1. Effective for complex cases – works well for large or recurrent retinal detachments.
  2. Precise retinal access – allows direct treatment of retinal tears, bleeding, or scarring.
  3. Can treat multiple eye problems – useful for diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, and eye infections too.
  4.
  1. May cause cataracts – especially in older patients.
  2. Vision recovery can take time – especially if gas/oil is used.
  3. Requires strict post-op positioning – lying face down for days may be uncomfortable.
  • In India (USD): $2,000 – $3,500
  • In Kenyan Shillings (KES): KSh 260,000 – KSh 455,000

Costs vary based on hospital, lens implants, and type of anesthesia.

A surgical procedure to repair retinal detachment by placing a silicone band (buckle) around the eye to gently push the eye wall toward the detached retina, helping it reattach.

  1. Long-standing success rate – especially effective for single tear detachments.
  2. Preserves the natural lens – lower risk of cataract formation compared to vitrectomy.
  3. Minimally invasive to the inner eye – retina is not directly entered.
  1. Not suitable for all detachments – less effective in complex or large retinal detachments.
  2. Mild vision distortion – can alter the shape of the eye slightly, affecting focus.
  3. Post-op discomfort – swelling, double vision, or soreness may occur initially.
  • In India (USD): $1,500 – $2,500
  • In Kenyan Shillings (KES): KSh 195,000 – KSh 325,000

Cost may vary depending on hospital, surgeon, and any combined procedures (e.g., cryotherapy).

A minimally invasive procedure where a gas bubble is injected into the eye to push the detached retina back into place. A freezing probe (cryopexy) or laser is then used to seal the retinal tear.

  1. Quick outpatient procedure – typically done under local anesthesia.
  2. Minimally invasive – no incisions or sutures required.
  3. Lower cost – more affordable than vitrectomy or scleral buckling.
  1. Strict head positioning needed – patient must keep their head in a specific position for days.
  2. Less effective for complex detachments – not ideal for multiple or large tears.
  3. Risk of recurrence – higher chance of redetachment than other methods.
  • In India (USD): $700 – $1,200
  • In Kenyan Shillings (KES): KSh 91,000 – KSh 156,000

Usually recommended for early or uncomplicated retinal detachments.
