LASIK/Laser vision correction is a quick eye surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea, improving vision.

• LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
• PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
• SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
• Contoura Vision / Wavefront LASIK
• Femto LASIK / Bladeless LASIK

LASIK is a popular laser eye surgery that corrects vision by reshaping the cornea. A thin flap is made on the surface of the eye, lifted, and a laser is used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. It’s used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

  1. Quick recovery – Clear vision usually within 24–48 hours.
  2. Painless and fast – The procedure takes less than 15 minutes per eye.
  3. Permanent results – Most patients no longer need glasses or contacts.
  1. Not ideal for everyone – People with thin corneas, dry eyes, or unstable vision may not qualify.
  2. Risk of dry eyes and glare – Some patients experience night vision issues.
  3. Rare complications – Undercorrection or flap issues can require enhancement surgery.
  • USD: $800 – $1,500 per eye
  • KES: Approx. KSh 105,000 – 200,000 per eye

Prices vary by hospital, technology used (e.g. bladeless LASIK), and surgeon experience.

SMILE is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery for vision correction. A femtosecond laser creates a small lens-shaped piece (lenticule) in the cornea, which is removed through a tiny incision—no flap is created. It treats myopia and astigmatism, and is a newer alternative to LASIK.

  1. No corneal flap – Reduces risk of flap complications.
  2. Less dry eye – Smaller incision preserves more corneal nerves.
  3. Quick recovery – Minimal downtime, return to normal activity in 1–2 days.
  1. Not for hyperopia – Currently only approved for nearsightedness and mild astigmatism.
  2. Limited availability – Fewer surgeons and machines offer SMILE.
  3. Touch-up options limited – Enhancement is more complex than LASIK if needed later.
  • USD: $1,200 – $2,000 per eye
  • KES: Approx. KSh 160,000 – 270,000 per eye

Advanced eye hospitals in Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai offer SMILE using Zeiss VisuMax systems.

PRK is a laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, no flap is created—instead, the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed and allowed to regrow naturally.

  1. No corneal flap – Safer for patients with thin corneas or active lifestyles.
  2. Good long-term results – Vision outcomes comparable to LASIK.
  3. Lower risk of flap-related complications – Ideal for contact sport athletes or military.
  4.
  1. Longer recovery – Vision takes several days to weeks to stabilize.
  2. Post-op discomfort – More irritation and sensitivity than LASIK.
  3. Slower return to routine – Time off work or driving may be longer.
